Transitional Living 
Group or Independent Living

 

Age Range of Clients
Young men and Women ages 16-21

 

Capacity

  • One Group Home located at West Florissant

  • Limited capacity for community based apartment living.

  • Maximum service capacity 16

 

Goals of the Program:
The Transitional Living Programs at New Beginnings help young people achieve self-sufficiency by acquiring independent living skills and reintegrating into their communities.  Youth are served throughout the three phases of the Transitional Living Programs (group home living, day treatment classes, and off campus independent living).

     
Group Home Living:

Eligibility

  • Free from severe chronic emotional problems
  • No current substance abuse
  • Enrolled in high school, a G.E.D. or training program
  • WiIlling to enroll in DFS Independent Living Class, if eligible
  • Self-motivated to attend all program activities and utilize available services.
 

Length of Intervention

The group home component of the transitional living program is 12-18 months.

 

Program Description and Services Provided:

New Beginnings provides highly individual care for each youth entering the group home phase of the transitional Living Programs.  An in-depth assessment, which considers the youth's particular strengths and challenges, is conducted upon placement and serves as the guide for creation of the individualized treatment plan.  Highly trained staff work to prepare resident for the transition to independent living.

 

Independent Living

 

Independent Living:

Eligibility

  • Willing to secure employment
  • Willing to work at least 20 hours per week
  • In need of shelter
  • No current substance abuse
  • Free from severe chronic emotional problems
  • In need of minimal direct adult supervision
  • Self-motivated to learb skills to become self-sufficient
 

Length of Intervention

Program participation typically lasts from 12-18 months, excluding follow up services.

 

 

Program Description and Services Provided:

  • This phase included subsidized apartments in the community.

Apartments are located in the City of St. Louis.  Regular contact in person or via telephone with Care Managers is a requirement of the program during all phases.  Care Managers are available to youth 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.  Youth continue to receive case management, individual and family therapy and decision making and life skills training as necessary.

  • Division of Family Services
  • Department of Mental Health
  • Behavioral health care companies
  • Family Courts
  • Prearranged payment plans with parents and/or youth.

Licensed and Accredited:

New Beginnings is licensed by the State of Missouri's Department of Mental Health.  We are a not-for-profit, non sectarian agency that serves children and families in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.
